It is this combination of complimentary access, flamboyant performances, and human warmth that makes Piatigorsky Foundation concerts so appealing to diverse audiences. Last year, The Foundation presented a tour of Washington, performing 10 concerts and reaching over 755 people in Seattle, Lacey, Issaquah, and Wenatchee. Likewise, this year The Piatigorsky Foundation aims to reach hundreds of people across Washington to increase awareness and appreciation of classical music in communities throughout the state. This year marks the fortieth anniversary that violinist Paul Rosenthal has been living and working in Alaska. After studying in New York at the Juilliard School and in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California, he realized that neither metropolis was the sort of place where he would be able to live the life of creative freedom he craved, and so found himself drawn to the Alaskan Frontier. At the beginning of his life in the North, Rosenthal lived for five years in a log cabin outside of Fairbanks. During that time, he traveled to many towns and villages around the vast state playing concerts and found a warm and welcoming public wherever he went. After a time, Rosenthal was asked to join the faculty of the University of Alaska, first in Fairbanks and later in Anchorage and taught in those cities for a number of years. Later the University bestowed the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters on their ex-faculty member, who has since re-located to Juneau. Rosenthal created a Chamber Music Festival in the picturesque town of Sitka-by-the-Sea which he still directs and which, thirty-eight years later, continues to attract enthusiastic performers and audiences to share the joy of glorious music close-up in an intimate and spectacularly scenic setting. Rosenthal continues to travel and perform a great deal outside of Alaska as well. Last month he enjoyed playing concerts around the Sunbelt, in Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston; January and February will find him in North Dakota, Washington State and on tour once again in Anchorage and smaller towns in Alaska. Pianist Doris Stevenson has won lavish praise from critics and the public alike for her solo and collaborative performances. She has soloed with the Boston Pops, played at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Salle Pleyel in Paris and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. In addition, Stevenson has performed with the leading lights in string playing such as Gregor Piatigorsky, Ruggiero Ricci and Paul Tortelier. Early in her career, she was invited by Heifetz and Piatigorsky to perform with them together. Stevenson is a founding member of the Sitka Summer Music Festival in Alaska, and has participated in numerous chamber music festivals throughout the United States. Evan Drachman established The Piatigorsky Foundation in 1990 in honor of his grandfather Gregor Piatigorsky. Piatigorsky deeply believed in the healing and inspiration power of classical music. He once said, “Music makes life better. Music is a necessity. It is rich. It is imaginative. It is magnificent. And it is for everyone”. Through his sizzling artistry and charismatic personality, Piatigorsky thus enlivened his mission by performing for millions of people around the globe. The Piatigorsky Foundation is committed to carrying on Piatigorsky’s noble aspiration by evoking cultural curiosity through educational and accessible live performances. *** |
